OCS Aims High in the 2011 Golden Service Awards

6th Jun 2011

The Golden Service Awards (GSA) is a bi-annual event organised by Kimberley-Clark Professional and the Cleaning Support Services Association to recognise excellence in the cleaning industry.  The awards provide a benchmark for quality and a means of identifying leaders in the field from organisations of all sizes and from all sectors.

Two years ago, OCS and Strand claimed four of the 16 prestigious awards and took the top accolade of Overall Winner.  At the awards ceremony, often described as the “Oscars of the Cleaning Industry”, our representatives received recognition on behalf of their teams for:

• Best Cleaned Premises Retail Outlet and Overall Winner – OCS at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth

• The Johnson Diversey Environmental Awareness Award – Strand at Hinxton Hall in Cambridge

• Marek Makowski was named the British Cleaning Council (BCC) Site Supervisor of the Year Award for his work at Lilly UK’s Earlwood Manor site.

The search for this year’s GSA winners has already begun and the call for entries closed on Friday, 13 May – with three new categories amongst a list of 19, ranging from Service Delivery Innovation to Best Specialist Cleaning Company and Excellence in a Small Cleaning Business.

In partnership with its clients, OCS and Strand have put forward nine entries to the GSA 2011:

The Wellcome Trust, Hinxton Hall
In 2009, a radical recycling scheme introduced to site by Strand led to the team being awarded the GSA Johnson Diversey Environmental Awareness Award.  In 2009, the scheme resulted in a 20% reduction in waste to landfill.  In 2011, a range of new initiatives for recycling other items in addition to food waste, has resulted in even greater support for the achievement of the client’s environmental goals.  Since the site was awarded the last Environmental Awareness Award, there has been a further reduction of almost 35% of waste to landfill.

The Wellcome Trust, Euston Road
For four years, Strand has provided cleaning services for the Wellcome Trust’s main head office building in London’s Euston Road and has met the highly specialised cleaning requirements at the adjacent Wellcome Collection building – a unique mix of galleries, events, exhibits and meeting places.  Strand has developed bespoke tailored cleaning practices for the site and the cleaning team has adopted no fewer than 183 special cleaning methods on this contract.

The Centre in Livingston – Best Site Supervisor
The Centre, Livingston, is one of the biggest in Scotland with over 150 shops, a leisure space and dining facilities.  Overall site supervisor Tom Westgarth is responsible for over 35 cleaning staff and supervisors.  He ensures all his team understand clearly the particular requirements of their role.  Some of our staff do not have English as their first language and Tom is very supportive and aims to deliver their training in an interesting and accessible way whilst constantly testing their understanding.  His competence and friendly attitude to colleagues is greatly valued by The Centre’s operational management.

Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup
In 2009, the Trust merged with two other London hospitals, which presented logistical challenges as wards and departments moved internally and from site to site.  The OCS team is proud to have achieved a consistently high service during this time.

Audit benchmarking reflects the fabric of the building constructed in 1974 of which some areas have been refurbished.  Refurbished areas must meet 90% on all audits and non refurbished 80%.  Over the past 12 months, 80,562 internal audit questions have resulted in the team maintaining an average across the site at 93.46% - comfortably above the 80% and 90% set pass marks.

Bedfordshire Hospital, Weller Wing
In June 2004, OCS’s healthcare team was awarded the cleaning contract with Bedfordshire Shared Services.  Since the start of the contract we have built an excellent working relationship with our clients at the Trust and this, along with a high quality value for money service, excellent communications and flexibility, have led to our being awarded an extension to March 31st 2012.  The contract comprises 10 residential units.  The Weller Wing provides mental health services to 61 adult residents in 4 wards, including assessment and inpatient admissions as well as an out patient service on the ground floor for people moving back into the community.

Mayer Brown
Strand helped Mayer Brown to relocate to its current site in London’s Bishopsgate with just over two weeks to facilitate the move and this was an outstanding success.  The move presented the team with the ideal opportunity to introduce CleanSmart™.  Our team strives to ensure the exact and specific service needs are met within customer facing areas, ensuring these are laid out uniformly, including the presentation of pens, writing pads, pencils and chairs which must be laid out in a prescribed manner.  This is a cultural pre-requisite and the team has quickly and professionally achieved the cultural understanding required to achieve and exceed client requirements.

Spie Matthew Hall, Lilly UK
In April 2010, Spie Matthew Hall awarded OCS the 3 year contract for the management of the waste and recycling services at Lilly’s Erl Wood facility in Basingstoke. The brief was to provide a full management function, co-ordinating contractors, managing costs and invoicing, providing innovation and advising on best practice and the provision of monthly volume reporting by waste type.

Our cleaning site supervisor has played a key role in coordinating on-site, day-to-day operations and the team continues to monitor recycling around site on an on-going basis. By introducing a clear sack policy, we are able to identify any contamination in the recycling containers.  The success of our recycling performance has led to the overall waste costs to Eli Lilly being reduced by 40%.

Park Royal Centre for Mental Health
OCS has worked with CNWL (Central and North West London NHS Foundation) Trust for over five years.  During that time, our portfolio of services has grown to include the provision of a range of soft FM services to some 45 sites comprising all the Mental Health Hospital inpatient sites, walk-in clinics and offices.

Our partnership with the Trust and teamwork during difficult and challenging circumstances have delivered impressive performance results have been impressive.  In the recent round of unannounced NHS Trust PEAT inspections, the inspectors were very impressed and awarded scores of very good or excellent.

Standard Bank
The prestigious contract with Standard Bank was awarded to Strand in 2009, supporting the client’s re-location from Cannon Street to their new building in Gresham Street, London.  The client brief was to supply a future-proof service that kept HVAC use to a minimum whilst delivering the highest quality standards.  The contract was initially mobilised with a general part time cleaning team but, after working through the many and varied TUPE issues with the client, we introduced CleanSmart™ adding structure and management to the cleaning processes.

The initial judging will now take place based on the entry form submission with points awarded by a judging team.  A number of finalists will be selected for each category with the second part of the judging taking place in June with site visits.

We wish all our teams who are entered the best of luck.
