Young Argyll Sporting Star Receives Top Award

4th Nov 2011

Fraser McGlone from Argyll has received a £500 OCS Young Sports Person Award in recognition of his outstanding sporting ability.  In the awards scheme, run in partnership with the charity SportsAid, mountain biker Fraser beat stiff competition to win one of two runners-up prizes in the Scotland region.

After watching the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup at Fort William, aged ten, Fraser decided he wanted to give the sport a try.  Now 17, he is an avid fan of mountain biking and spends hours practising in the local hills.   He even does a 34 mile round trip to the gym twice a week.

This year, Fraser qualified for his first World Cup Final in South Africa as part of the GB team.   Fraser draws inspiration from his coach, describing him as, ‘awesome at helping my mind set’.  Fraser relies heavily on his parents for financial support.  He tries to help by reducing subsistence costs, and has even slept in a van with his friend rather than incurring hotel charges.

Fraser was thrilled to win his award and commented, “The money from OCS will definitely help with travel costs and accommodation and will save sleeping in that van!  I feel like all the hours of hard work have paid off.”
Previous OCS Young Sports Person Award winners include Olympic athletes, 400m runner Richard Buck, and gymnasts Louis Smith and Beth Tweddle MBE, along with Paralympic field athlete Nathan Stephens.

Chris Cracknell, chief executive of OCS said, “The OCS Young Sports Person Awards, now in its 14th year, highlights our commitment to supporting young people who are great role models, not only for their peers but for many others in business and the community.  Their drive and relentless determination to achieve their goals is inspirational and our grass-roots scheme helps young athletes right at the start of their career when support and funding is needed most.  Well done to the athletes who have been rewarded this year and we hope that they will have the same success as many of our past winners, some of whom look set to represent GB in London 2012.”
