OCS’s Chris Ashmore shortlisted for an FSM Award

1st Nov 2013

Chris Ashmore, regional accounts director of catering at OCS, the international total facilities management provider, has been shortlisted for a Foodservice Management (FSM) Award in the Healthcare category.

Ashmore is nominated for leading the development and implementation of a new initiative to improve patient catering at Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals. essential goodness, the new brand launched last year, places increased emphasis on good nutrition for patients, staff and visitors and introduces a more high street branded feel to encourage patients to feel more positive about their hospital stay.

The essential goodness name describes how vital good food is to patient recovery, and illustrates the quality of the food, its provenance and freshness.

Ashmore brainstormed ideas within the OCS catering team, with Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust, and with patient groups. Then, working with OCS’s marketing team, he developed branding for everything from menus and staff uniforms to crockery, cutlery and trolleys to ensure patients received a fully-branded approach.

At the same time, Ashmore’s team worked closely with dieticians from the trust, and the patients themselves, on a range of new menus. The essential goodness menus use symbols to highlight options that are healthy eating, high energy, and part of patients’ five fruit and vegetables a day, as well as soft and vegetarian options. This encourages patients to adopt a healthier approach to food, and to understand exactly what they’re eating and how it can support their recovery.

In its first year, essential goodness has been an outstanding success. Patients’ positive perception of the hospital increased by 25 per cent in the monthly patient perception surveys conducted before and after the introduction of essential goodness.

Ashmore said: “I’m delighted that OCS has been shortlisted for a prestigious FSM Award, and I’m very proud to be recognised personally. The OCS catering team has worked hard to mobilise the catering contract and the essential goodness brand as a means of improving the quality of food for patients and providing the best nutrition to support their treatment and care. Being shortlisted is a testament to the effort of all involved”.

The awards ceremony will be held at London’s The Grange Tower Bridge Hotel on 25 November. More than 450 experts from the food service management industry will be in attendance.
